Occupational exposure limits (Valeurs limites d'exposition professionnelle – VLEP/ Grenswaarden voor beroepsmatige blootstelling – GWBB) in Belgium have a binding legal status. Exposure of workers above the limit values is a legal offence and can lead to a prosecution.
The origin of occupational exposure limits is heterogeneous: threshold limit values from ACGIH, indicative OELs from SCOEL, binding limit values from the EU, OELs from other European countries and a combination of these.
The promulgation of limit values goes through a process of consultation of the social partners: representatives of employers and employees. In this stage, socio-economic factors and technological feasibility are considered.
There is no fixed time schedule or frequency for the publication of the list of limit values.
