Comparative study of aseptic and septic non-unions: lnfluence of systemic and local factors on bone metabolism and fracture healing.

Project No. FF-FR 0252

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

The development of aseptic and septic delayed fracture healing and non-unions will be analysed regarding possible variations or similarities on the level of cellular activity. In addition to that, "healthy" bone from the iliac crest of the same patient will be analysed to eventually point out systemic bone cell malfunction or to acknowledge non-unions as local problem at the site of fracture.

Activities/Methods:

Intraoperatively collected samples from non-union and iliac crest will be analysed by cell culture, RNA isolation, and by histological methods. Clinical follow up of all included patients is planned. Animal experiments (rats) include histological and microCT analysis of non-unions, generated in established model of long bone non-union, in aseptic and septic conditions.
