Compensation benefits

In 2023, the accident insurance institutions responsible for the industrial and public sectors paid compensation amounting to 11.326 billion euro following insurance claims. These payments encompassed services, cash payments and payments in kind to victims of accidents and occupational disease and to surviving dependants.

5.206 billion euro were paid for curative treatment and for medical, occupational and social rehabilitation measures. This figure was 7.2 % higher than in the previous year. Further 6.120 billion euro (+ 2.4 %) were paid in the form of pensions, lump-sum benefits, allowances and similar expenditure.

In the area of pupil accident insurance, compensation payments totaling a further 628 million euro were made in 2023 (+ 8.7 %). Of this, 479 million euro were accounted for by curative treatment and rehabilitation measures and 149 million euro by pensions and similar payments.
