New Director General of the German Social Accident Insurance

Effective 1 July, 2019, Dr Stefan Hussy will assume the position of Director General of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV). He succeeds Professor Joachim Breuer, who has resigned from office.

Dr Hussy has a PhD in engineering and has held various positions in both the private sector and the social accident insurance system. The focus of his work has been on prevention. His positions have included Head of Prevention at the German Social Accident Insurance Association for Local Authorities, where he was also responsible for safety and health in schools and day-care centres, and at the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Trade and Logistics Industry (BGHW), where he was a member of the Management Board.

Hussy: ‘I’m looking forward to the new role and the change of perspective it will bring. New forms of work and digitalisation represent enormous challenges for the German social accident insurance institutions. How can we best support companies in a changing world of work? How can we contribute to making the digital school a safe and healthy school? How can we deal with new risks in the workplace? We need to find good answers to these questions, and that’s what I intend to do.’

The current Deputy Directors General of the DGUV are Dr Edlyn Höller and Petra Zilch. Ms Zilch will retire in January 2020. Dr Hussy and Dr Höller will then head up the DGUV.

Professor Breuer will continue his commitment to occupational safety and health and social security even after stepping down as Director General. He holds a professorship in insurance medicine at the University of Lübeck and will continue as President of the International Social Security Association (ISSA).
