Brexit - Indefinite extension of the use of the CE marking

The UKCA marking came into force on 1 January 2021. In order to give companies more time, in most cases the CE marking could continue to be used until the end of 2023. From 2024, all products requiring labelling that are newly placed in the UK should bear the UKCA label. On 1 August 2023, it was announced by the UK Department for Business and Trade that the recognition of the CE marking is to be extended for a further time, probably indefinitely. The new update will apply to 18 regulations, including PPE, machinery and outdoor.

Further information can be found here.

Four companies awarded the EuroTest Prize

Since 2001, BG BAU has awarded the EuroTest prize on the occasion of the world's leading trade fair "bauma", thereby honouring the innovative occupational safety ideas of the many large and small companies that are paving the way for Vision Zero in the construction industry.

These ideas help prevent accidents and work-related illnesses and make construction sites safer.

From a total of 34 applications, the expert jury, which is made up of members of international testing institutes as well as representatives of universities, construction industry associations and the BG BAU, determined four award winners this year in an extensive evaluation process.

The winners of this year's EuroTest award are the companies OilQuick Deutschland KG, ALFIX GmbH, BAUER Maschinen GmbH and the company ARCURE SA BLAXTAIR.

Please have a look at our press release and the film that was shot during the ceremony.

BG BAU occupational safety premiums

Occupational safety is always a hot topic in the construction industry. BG BAU member companies that invest in occupational safety and health protection can benefit from funding for selected products that make work safer.

For construction machinery and construction site trucks, these are currently:

  • Devices for automatic engine stop,
  • the retrofitting of turn assistance systems on trucks,
  • the retrofitting of reversing cameras on construction machinery and trucks,
  • the retrofitting of side cameras on trucks and hydraulic excavators,
  • access systems for mobile construction machinery and
  • quick-change systems that meet increased safety requirements.

The current lists with the requirements and instructions for the individual measures can be found on the BG BAU homepage under the following link: occupational safety premiums

Manufacturers of relevant products can apply for inclusion on the respective list of eligible products.

Scheme for the use of the CE mark in the UK has been extended again

Machinery and equipment that has successfully undergone a conformity assessment procedure by Dec. 31, 2022, may continue to be introduced into the U.K. market with the CE mark until the certificate expires or, at the latest, Dec. 31, 2027. The UK authorities recommend that manufacturers who choose this route include in the UK declaration of conformity the list of relevant notified UK standards and equivalent harmonized EU standards that they have applied, as well as details of the EU-recognized notified body that carried out the conformity assessment procedures. Please note that the online guide on this topic has been updated and can be accessed here.

Quick coupler - important note from the EU Commission

Quick-change attachments on hydraulic excavators and loaders backhoe that currently comply with standard EN 474-1:2006+A5:2018 or its successor EN 474-1:2006+A6:2019 no longer represent the state of the art and do not meet the safety standard specified by the Machinery Directive. Due to the publication in the Official Journal on 14.10.2021, the presumption of conformity according to the Machinery Directive is no longer triggered for these quick-change devices.

The DGUV Test Prüf- und Zertifizierungsstelle Fachbereich Bauwesen already comprehensively explained the technical requirements in the magazine BauPortal in May 2020. The requirements of the 474 series of standards announced for 2022 for quick-change attachments for hydraulic excavators and backhoe loaders are already considered in the current test principles GS-BAU-25 (PDF, 185 kB, non-accessible) .
