Survey of workers on: The effects of climate change in relation to safety and health at the workplace

Aims:

Global warming has led to a noticeable change in climatic conditions since the turn of the millennium, which also affects the world of work. It was of interest to what extent this topic has already reached the companies and whether the first measures have already been considered or implemented in the companies to counter the consequences of climate change.

Activities/Methods:

A representative survey examined employees' perception of risks and awareness of the effects of the climate crisis on safety and health at work. The German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) surveyed more than 1,000 employees via an online panel, almost half of whom were managers.

Results:

Assessment of the risks from climate change at work by employees and managers: Heat and psychological reactions are seen as the greatest risks. Managers are more aware of the risks. Many companies have dealt with the issue of climate change and its consequences for safe and healthy work. Some have even already planned or implemented protective measures. Increased awareness and advice from those responsible for occupational safety is essential so that companies and institutions can deal with the already noticeable and foreseeable consequences of the climate crisis as quickly as possible. Strategies are needed to protect the safety and health of employees so that they remain healthy, motivated and therefore productive.
